I started Tots Crops almost by chance; my daughter attended a nursery in the city, while I was working in the barbers. In the city, you are generally self-employed and rent a chair, so I was only working two days a week. A friend of the owner was looking for work, and could rent the chair for five days a week, so that was it; my chair was gone. Business is business. At the same time, my relationship with my daughter’s father broke down, so suffice to say it was a tough few weeks! As one door closes, however, another opens, and though I didn’t know it then, I was about to embark on one of the most exciting journeys of my life.

I was bored, a bit lost, lonely and really fed up. One day, when collecting my daughter Ellie from nursery, I looked at her friends and realised they all needed a hair cut. I asked the manger for permission to cut their hair, as I knew all the parents, and we gave it a go. The business flourished from there. It took a few years to master a system that worked for everyone, but it has been so much fun from the very outset.

One major problem was the hairdressing chair; they are all rubbish to be frank, and certainly not safe enough to be used in a nursery environment. As a hairdresser and a mum, I can say that with absolute certainty. If the child is uncomfortable and the stylist is getting stressed, it’s not an ideal environment for cutting hair. If a child is not comfortable, the stylist is breaking their back, everyone’s stressed, not great for cutting hair.

I embarked on designing and manufacturing my own cutting chair. This was extremely hard work to say the least, but I got there. The chair we came up with is awesome; the children love it and more importantly it’s great to work on. It’s made in the UK and has a high chair safety certificate. Our new pro-to type folding hairdressing chair is an invaluable new asset to our business.

When we started out my grandma used to make all our cutting gowns – she had a new job at 77! Ellie, my little girl, has been an inspiration from day one. She has told me everything she wanted, from getting her hair cut, to how to put the strap on the seat! It really started as a family business. Ellie is still nagging me for a mobile game for The Tots Crops Septuplets, and a product range for her and her friends!

The Tots Crops Septuplets: I broke my ankle in 2009 so had a lot of time on my hands while I was house-bound. One day, I sat there and thought, “We need some characters; little raindrops coming out of the rainbow, all with hair cuts. Seven of them to represent the colours in the rainbow, all named after hair cuts! 24 hours later, I had drawn up the first phase of the Septuplets. They are going to be a thriving little business in their own right.

From a personal point of view, Tots Crops means so much to me. Setting up the company gave me the confidence to feel great about myself again. It’s made me realise that anyone can be successful and run their own business; they just need a bit of support. That is the reason that I have started to run training courses and Memberships that allow any hairdressers wanting to get back to work or extend their skill set, the opportunity to do so. The Membership system, so you know you belong to a team, even if you are self employed! Now offering you this opportunity to be part of our membership community and learn to run your own business gives it a little star dust! Lets face it hairdressers are fun, put us all in one room, hhhhmmmm any thing can happen!

It’s going to give so many others that feeling of real achievement and a great job that fits in around their family. We are fairly priced, so I can rest confident that not ripping parents off to get their child’s hair cut, while the stylist can still earn a living.

Tots Crops is simple, sensible and has a positive effect on the lives of everyone who’s involved with it. The brand is set to grow exponentially in the coming years, while never losing sight of the principles on which it was founded.
